The Press Council from the Republic of Moldova was established in 2010 as an independent national journalistic self-regulatory structure. The mission of Moldova Press Council is to contribute to holding the media accountable to its consumers by amicably settling disputes arising between media and the media consumers, promoting quality journalism and observance of ethical journalism principles by media and to examine complaints of media consumers with regard to violation of ethical standards.
At the same time, the Press Council develops other activities for promoting qualitative and accountable journalism in relation to the public. Thus, the Press Council launched the online platform Mediaforum.md, with a view to discuss the problems of the journalistic community and its interaction with the public; the National Award for Journalistic Ethics and Professional Deontology was set up, which is provided based on a public contest with involvement of media experts and media product consumers; additionally, the Press Council organizes Mass-Media Forum in Republic of Moldova on a yearly basis.
The members of the Press Council are elected through public contest, which is conducted every two years, and Moldovan editorial offices and mass-media product consumers have the possibility to suggest representatives to be part of this journalistic self-regulatory structure.
The Press Council from the Republic of Moldova accepts complaints on the materials published in print media, online, broadcasting and social media (if it is published by an official social page of media).
